Artist Statement
Painting has always been my preferred form of expression, and I am very comfortable in this genre. Most recently, I started experimenting with digital creations by acquiring imagery collected from photographing my paintings at different stages of my painting process. I found it interesting and informative to discover what I had lost or gained from editing the piece I was working on. I started producing digitally manipulated art using images from these photographs. "Displacement," an accordion-shaped art piece with twelve images inspired by a quote by Malala Yousafzai about asylum seekers' mental distress: "Either you lose hope completely, and you shatter and break into pieces, or you become so resilient that no one can break you anymore." I created this piece using digitally manipulated images from my new process of rearranging digital spaces from the real and imagined. According to the spiritual definition, a chicken's portrayal symbolizes something needing Shelter and Protection, a repeating image in this art piece "Displacement."
